Dirty Dozen / Clean Fifteen Fruits and Vegetables

Posted on: August 24, 2010

What does the “Dirty Dozen” list of fruits and vegetables have to do with frugal living in St. Louis, you might ask? Good question.

For those of us wanting to reduce our family’s exposure to pesticides, the “Dirty Dozen” list will allow the money we choose to spend on organic produce to have the most “bang for the buck”. In addition, the “Clean Fifteen” list helps us know which fruits and veggies aren’t worth paying more to get organic.

I’ve been meaning to print out the list of the dozen most pesticide-ridden vegetables for awhile now. With a little hunting, I found a printable version here (click on the image to the left to download and print).

Included in this printout is the list of the “Clean Fifteen”, which are the fifteen vegetables found to have the fewest pesticides. With my newly-acquired list in hand, I’m ready to tackle the produce department!

How about you? What things, if any, do you choose to buy organic?
