Great Forest Park Balloon Glow and Race this weekend!

Posted on: September 13, 2010

If you have never been to the Balloon Glow at Forest Park the night before the Great Forest Park Balloon Race, then you are missing out indeed!

As part of the weekend-long festivities surrounding the Balloon Race, the Glow is a fairy land of glowing hot-air balloons against the backdrop of a St. Louis September night. We went last year and were enchanted. Wow.

The weekend is divided into two main events, the Balloon Glow and The Race. Both are free, with free parking in Forest Park. To see videos of past Glows and Race Days, click here.

What you need to know about the Balloon Glow before you go:

  • The Glow goes from 7-8:30 on Friday, September 17. Do not be late. Trust me on this.
  • In fact, consider arriving significantly early – by 5 if you can – and taking a picnic dinner.
  • Free parking is available in the South Lot of the Zoo. From there you can walk to Central Field. Just follow the crowds. If you park in this zoo lot, it will be fairly easy for you to exit the park when you choose to do so.
  • Another good parking option if you go really early is by the Science Center.
  • There will be “hordes” of people, as we say at our house.
  • When a fog horn sounds, the balloons will light up for a short time. Usually there are a handful of  lit balloons at all times, but when the horn sounds many glow at once. Spectacular!
  • Concessions and trinkets (lots of glowing toys) will be available.
  • A flashlight might not be a horrible idea to take along.
  • Strollers can be a bit of a challenge in the crowd, but worth it for keeping little ones close in the dark.
  • You will be walking through slightly uneven terrain in a grassy field.

What you need to know about the Great Forest Park Balloon Race before you go:

  • The Balloon Race is scheduled for Saturday, September 18.
  • Festivities begin at noon, with the opening ceremony at 3:30 and the launching of the “hare” at 4:30. To see the detailed schedule, click here.
  • Should the weather be inclement on Saturday, the rain date for the Race is Sunday, September 19.
  • The race itself consists of all the other balloons “chasing” the Energizer Bunny “hare”. The balloon that drops a birdseed baggie closest to the hare wins.
  • There is an annual photo contest.
  • A variety of festivities for the whole family: entertainment, pony rides, freebies, children’s activities, and more!
  • Concessions will be available for purchase.
  • Consider taking a picnic and a blanket/chairs along.
  • All activities will take place on a grassy field. Strollers can be a challenge in the grass.

Does anyone else have any tips for enjoying this fantastic St. Louis tradition?

[…] If you’ve decided not to go to the Balloon Glow tomorrow night, then perhaps you’d be interested in a FREE evening at Eckert’s Fun Farm […]
