My kids and went to the Magic House today to activate our membership from the fabulous Groupon deal a couple weeks back, and I saw fliers telling of a fun event the children’s museum has started: Fitness First Fridays.

  • First Friday of every month – starting tonight, January 7
  • 5:30-9 PM
  • Admission to Fitness First Friday included in admission cost
  • Reservations suggested – online or by calling 314-822-8900 ext. 18
  • Children 14 and under may earn free admission by completing the fitness challenge for the month – this month’s challenge is setting specific health and fitness goals for 2011. Complete challenge and take in sheet for free admission.
  • The first 100 families to register for First Fitness Friday each month will receive a backpack with pedometer, jump rope and other health-related materials
  • Kids who complete a 1500-step circuit through the museum will receive a Fitness First Club Membership, good for a free snack in the cafe during the evening

This sounds like an unusual way to spend a Saturday afternoon with the family!

  • Saturday, January 8, noon-4:30
  • Old Courthouse Museum, downtown
  • Re-creation of a King’s Ball: cake, dancing, music, and an intro to French Christmas customs
  • For more information, call 314-655-1600

Head to the Planetarium at the Science Center tonight for a chance to view the night sky through a high-powered telescope!

  • Friday, January 7, 7-10 PM
  • Free, including free parking
  • “Star Tonight” presentation in the Orthwein Starbay
  • Telescope set up for free public viewing, weather permitting

One of the best things about Powder Valley Conservation Center is that it offers great indoor and outdoor options. It’s the perfect place to take the kids when you just need to get out of the house but aren’t sure where to go!

Some things to keep in mind when visiting Powder Valley:

  • Located near Geyer and I-44
  • All free!
  • Trails open daily 8-6 or 8-8 (depending on the season)
  • Nature Center Building open Tu-Sa 8-5
  • Many hands-on activities geared toward kids, including pelts to touch, treehouse to explore, fish eyes to look through, and tons more!
  • Trails are paved but generally not handicap-accessible. We’ve taken strollers on them, but it is definitely a workout! Most of the trails are quite steep.
  • Trails vary in range from 1/2 mile to 1 1/5 mile
